Where WebP keeps its metadata

WebP is a RIFF container. Metadata sits in dedicated EXIF and XMP chunks, with the colour profile in ICCP. An extended-format header, VP8X, records which of those chunks are present.

How we remove it

The metadata chunks are dropped, the RIFF size field is corrected, and — importantly — the VP8X feature flags are cleared to match. The VP8 or VP8L bitstream holding your pixels is copied unchanged.

Worth knowing about WebP

  • Clearing the VP8X flags is the step naive implementations miss. Leaving a flag set for a chunk that no longer exists produces a file that strict decoders reject.
  • WebP files converted from JPEG often inherit the original camera EXIF, including GPS. Converting a format is not the same as cleaning it.
  • Animated WebP is supported; the ANIM and ANMF chunks are preserved.

Does removing metadata change my WebP file's quality?
No. The metadata chunks are dropped, the RIFF size field is corrected, and — importantly — the VP8X feature flags are cleared to match. The VP8 or VP8L bitstream holding your pixels is copied unchanged. After each removal we re-read the finished file and, where the browser can decode both, compare every pixel against the original to prove nothing changed.

No. The file is parsed and rewritten by JavaScript on your own device. There is no upload endpoint, so there is also no size cap and no queue.
