EXIF viewer

Drop any photo to see every hidden field it carries — including the ones most viewers miss, like embedded thumbnails, C2PA credentials and AI generation parameters.

What this viewer reads

Most EXIF viewers stop at the standard EXIF block. Plenty of identifying information lives elsewhere in the file, so this one also decodes:

  • EXIF — camera make and model, body and lens serial numbers, exposure settings, timestamps with timezone offsets.
  • GPS — latitude, longitude, altitude, and sometimes direction and speed.
  • IPTC and XMP — creator, copyright, captions, keywords, and the document history chain that records which applications touched the file.
  • PNG text chunkstEXt, iTXt and zTXt, where Stable Diffusion interfaces store prompts, seeds and model hashes.
  • C2PA — Content Credentials, the signed provenance record used by Adobe Firefly and others.
  • Embedded thumbnails — a preview generated before your edits, which can still show what you cropped out.
  • Container comments — JPEG COM segments, GIF comment blocks, QuickTime atoms.

The fields worth paying attention to

Not all metadata is equally revealing. Ranked roughly by how much it exposes:

  1. GPS coordinates. Precise to a few metres. A handful of photos is often enough to identify a home, a workplace and a routine.
  2. Body and lens serial numbers. A persistent identifier that links every photo from that camera, even across anonymous accounts.
  3. Embedded thumbnail. Generated before editing. If you cropped someone out and the thumbnail was not regenerated, they are still in the file.
  4. Creator, copyright and contact fields. Often auto-filled by editing software with your real name.
  5. Timestamps. Individually harmless. Across a set of photos they map out your daily pattern.

When you want this gone, the free image metadata remover strips all of it without re-compressing the image — or use thebulk image metadata remover for a whole folder.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does an EXIF viewer show me?
Everything the camera or software wrote into the file alongside the picture: make and model, lens, exposure settings, the exact capture time, GPS coordinates, editing history, copyright fields, and any embedded thumbnail. This viewer also decodes XMP, IPTC, PNG text chunks, C2PA content credentials and AI generation parameters.
Is my photo uploaded to read it?
No. The file is parsed by JavaScript on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, which also means there is no queue, no size cap and no rate limit.
Why does my photo show no EXIF at all?
Either it never had any — screenshots and most AI-generated images do not — or something already removed it. Social networks commonly strip EXIF from the copy they serve publicly. A re-saved or converted file often loses it too.
Can I see the GPS location on a map?
We show you the coordinates and offer a link you can click to open a map. We deliberately do not load map tiles automatically, because fetching a tile would send your photo’s coordinates to a third-party map server — the exact leak this site exists to prevent.
