What's actually in there

A photo from a phone typically carries all of this.

GPS coordinates
Latitude, longitude and altitude, usually accurate to a few metres. Enough to identify a home address.
Device serial number
A unique identifier that links every photo you have ever taken with that camera or phone.
Embedded thumbnail
A small copy of the original, made before you edited. It can still show what you cropped or blurred out.
Exact timestamp
Date, time and timezone, down to the second — a record of where you were and when.
Edit history
Which software touched the file, sometimes with the full chain of applications and versions.

What an image metadata remover actually does.

Every photo is two things at once: a picture, and a written record of the circumstances in which it was made. An image metadata remover deletes the second part and leaves the first alone. That record is stored in three overlapping standards — EXIF, IPTC and XMP — and between them they hold your GPS coordinates, your camera's serial number, the exact second of capture, the software you edited with, and very often your name.

None of it is visible when you look at the image. All of it travels with the file when you email it, message it, or hand it to a client.

A free online image metadata remover that doesn't upload anything

This is an online image metadata remover in the literal sense: it lives at a web address and there is nothing to install. It is not, however, an upload service. There is no endpoint that receives your photo. Every byte is read, parsed and rewritten by code running inside your own browser.

That distinction has practical consequences. There is no file size cap, because there is no upload to time out. There is no queue, because there is no shared server. And there is no retention policy for you to take on trust, because we never receive a file to retain. You can confirm all of this yourself: open your browser's Network tab and clean an image — you will see no requests. Install the site and switch off your network, and it still works.

What your photos are actually carrying

The fields worth caring about, roughly in order of how much they give away:

  • GPS coordinates. Latitude, longitude and usually altitude, accurate to a few metres, often with the compass bearing the camera was facing. This does not tell someone your city. It tells them which building, and roughly which floor.
  • Device and lens serial numbers. Unique identifiers written into every frame that camera produces — a durable link between every photo you have ever taken, even across accounts with nothing else in common.
  • The embedded thumbnail. Cameras store a small preview inside the EXIF block. Some editors regenerate it after you edit; many do not. If you cropped someone out and the thumbnail was not refreshed, the original framing is still in the file.
  • Names and copyright. Editing software asks for your name once during setup and then writes it into everything you export.
  • Edit history. XMP records a document identifier that survives saving, plus a chain of which applications touched the file and when.

Lossless removal, which is the part most tools get wrong

There are two ways to build a metadata remover. The easy way is to draw the image onto a canvas and export it — three lines of code, and the metadata disappears because canvas has no concept of metadata. It also decodes and re-encodes your photo, so what you get back is a re-compression of your original rather than your original with the tags removed. Do it twice and the loss compounds.

The harder way is to understand the file format. Image containers keep the compressed picture and the metadata in separate places, so if you can read the structure you can remove one without touching the other. That is what this tool does, with a dedicated parser for each format: JPEG marker segments, PNG chunks, WebP RIFF chunks, TIFF directories, and the ISO box structure behind HEIC, AVIF, MP4 and MOV.

The result is that cleaning a file costs you nothing. After every removal the finished file is parsed again from scratch to list anything remaining, and both files are decoded so every pixel can be compared against the original. Files are identified by their magic bytes rather than their extension, so a PNG someone renamed to .jpg is still handled correctly. AI images, C2PA credentials and ChatGPT

AI generators leave their own trail. Stable Diffusion interfaces write the complete prompt, negative prompt, seed, sampler and model hash into PNG text chunks, readable in any text editor. Midjourney, DALL·E and Adobe Firefly write generator names into EXIF and XMP fields. Images from ChatGPT, DALL·E 3 and Sora carry a cryptographically signed C2PA content credential recording that they were made with AI.

Removing metadata does not make an image undetectable as AI — classifiers work on the pixels, and invisible watermarks survive metadata removal entirely. And several platforms ask for AI content to be disclosed, with the EU AI Act's Article 50 transparency rules applying from 2 August 2026. We will show you what is in your file and remove it if you ask. We will not help you pass AI work off as something it is not, which is also why this tool does not modify your pixels to defeat detectors.

Questions about this tool

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no upload endpoint. Every byte is read, parsed and rewritten by JavaScript running on your own device. You can prove it: open your browser's Network tab and clean a file — you will see no requests. Or install the site and turn your Wi-Fi off; it still works.
Does removing metadata reduce my image quality?
Not here. Most online tools decode your image and re-save it, which re-compresses the pixels and loses quality every time. We edit the file's container directly and copy the compressed pixel data through untouched, so the image that comes out is pixel-for-pixel identical to the one that went in. After each clean we decode both files and compare every pixel to prove it.
What exactly gets removed?
EXIF (camera make and model, serial numbers, exposure settings), GPS coordinates and altitude, IPTC and XMP fields (author, copyright, captions, keywords, edit history), embedded thumbnails, C2PA content credentials, AI generation data such as Stable Diffusion prompts and seeds, and container comments. You can choose to keep rotation, colour profile and copyright.
Why would I keep the colour profile or rotation?
Because stripping them has visible side effects. Without the orientation flag some photos display sideways, and without the ICC profile colours can shift on other screens. Neither identifies you, so both are kept by default. Copyright and author fields do identify you, so those are removed unless you ask otherwise.
Which file types are supported?
Images: JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC/HEIF, GIF and TIFF. Video: MP4 and MOV. Video files are read in slices rather than loaded into memory, so multi-gigabyte clips work without crashing your browser.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed cap, which is unusual for an image metadata remover online — most impose one because they pay for the bandwidth. Here the limit is your device's memory rather than an upload quota, and video is handled by streaming, so very large clips are fine.
Should I remove C2PA content credentials from AI images?
That is your call, and it depends on where the file is going. C2PA is a signed record of how a file was made. Several platforms ask for AI content to be disclosed, and the EU AI Act's Article 50 transparency rules apply from 2 August 2026. We show you what is in the file and remove it if you ask, but we will not help you pass AI work off as something it is not.
Do social networks strip metadata for me?
Some do, some do not, and the ones that do usually strip it from the public copy while keeping the original. Relying on that is a bad habit — strip it before you upload, not after. We keep a per-platform breakdown in the guides.

What does a metadata remover do?
A metadata remover deletes the hidden information a file carries alongside the part you can see. In a photo that means EXIF, IPTC and XMP fields — GPS coordinates, camera make and model, serial numbers, timestamps, editing history, copyright lines — plus embedded thumbnails and, in AI images, C2PA content credentials and generation parameters. A good one removes only that layer and leaves the picture untouched. Most online tools take a shortcut: they re-save the image, which strips metadata as a side effect but also re-compresses your photo. This photo metadata remover rewrites the file's container instead, so the pixels come out byte-for-byte identical.
Can I remove metadata from a photo?
Yes, and you do not need to install anything. Drop the image onto this metadata remover and it is stripped on your own device in about a second. Your operating system can also do a partial job: on Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, then Details, then "Remove Properties and Personal Information"; on macOS, Preview's Inspector lets you delete the location. Be aware that built-in tools are often incomplete — Windows leaves several EXIF fields behind, and neither touches C2PA credentials. Why remove metadata from photos?

Mainly because photos say more about you than you intend:

  • Location. Geotagged photos carry coordinates accurate to a few metres. A picture taken at home points at your front door.
  • Identity. Camera and lens serial numbers link every photo you have ever taken with that equipment, and editing software often writes your real name into the Artist and Copyright fields.
  • Timing. Timestamps across a set of photos map out your routine — when you are out, and when you are not.
  • What you edited out. The embedded thumbnail is generated before your edits and can still show the original framing.

Smaller files are a minor bonus: metadata typically adds a few kilobytes per image.

What is metadata used for?
Plenty of it is genuinely useful, which is why it exists. Orientation flags stop photos appearing sideways and colour profiles keep colours consistent between screens — this tool preserves both by default. Photographers study exposure data to learn from their own work. Publishers rely on IPTC credit and copyright fields for licensing. Digital asset management systems use keywords and captions to make large libraries searchable. Newsrooms and investigators use metadata to help verify where and when an image was made. The problem is not that metadata exists; it is that it is switched on by default and invisible by design, so it gets shared by people who have no idea it is there.
What is image metadata?
Image metadata is structured information written inside the image file, next to but separate from the compressed picture. Three standards overlap in practice: EXIF, written by the camera (make, model, serial numbers, exposure settings, orientation, timestamps, GPS); IPTC, a press and publishing standard (caption, credit, byline, copyright, keywords); and XMP, Adobe's XML format, which adds an edit history and a document identifier that survives saving. Containers add their own layer too — PNG text chunks, JPEG comment segments, QuickTime atoms in video. There is a longer explanation in what is EXIF metadata.
What are examples of metadata?

Real fields from an ordinary phone photo:

  • GPSLatitude / GPSLongitude / GPSAltitude — where the photo was taken, and how high up.
  • Make / Model / LensModel — Apple, iPhone 15 Pro, and the specific lens.
  • BodySerialNumber — a unique identifier for that camera.
  • DateTimeOriginal / OffsetTime — the exact second of capture and the timezone.
  • Artist / Copyright — usually your real name, auto-filled by editing software.
  • Software — which application last wrote the file.
  • ThumbnailImage — a small copy of the picture, often pre-edit.

AI images add their own: prompts, seeds, sampler settings and model hashes in PNG text chunks, plus signed C2PA credentials.

Do all photos have metadata?
No. Camera and phone originals almost always do. Screenshots carry very little, because there is no camera and no GPS fix — usually just the device and a timestamp. AI-generated images carry a different kind entirely: generator tags and content credentials rather than exposure data. And any file that has been converted, re-saved or run through a compressor may have lost most of it along the way. Social platforms strip metadata from the copies they serve publicly, so an image downloaded from a feed is often already bare. The only way to know is to look — the EXIF viewer reads a file without changing it.
How do I see if my photo has metadata?
Drop it into the EXIF viewer. It lists every field it finds, grouped by what each one exposes, and it reads the file on your device rather than uploading it. Your operating system offers a partial view too — Properties then Details on Windows, or Get Info on macOS — but both show a subset and neither surfaces XMP history, PNG text chunks or C2PA credentials. If you prefer a command line, ExifTool remains the most thorough option available.
Can metadata on photos be wrong?
Frequently, and this matters if anyone is treating it as evidence. A camera with an unset or drifting clock stamps every photo with the wrong time. Timezone offsets are often missing or wrong, so a photo can appear hours away from when it was taken. GPS needs a fix: indoors or in a city canyon, coordinates can be stale, imprecise, or simply absent. Editing software sometimes copies metadata from a source file into a derivative, so the fields describe a different image. Treat metadata as a strong hint about provenance, never as proof.
Can image metadata be faked?
EXIF, IPTC and XMP can be edited freely — they are ordinary fields in the file, and rewriting a date, a location or a camera model takes seconds with common tools. That is exactly why metadata alone is weak evidence. C2PA content credentials are the deliberate exception: the manifest is cryptographically signed, so altering it is detectable. What signing cannot prevent is deletion — a credential can be removed entirely, which leaves the file in the same state as any photo that never had one. This tool removes metadata and will not help you falsify it; there is more on that in C2PA explained.
Does screenshotting a photo remove metadata?
It removes the original's metadata, because a screenshot is a brand new image captured from your display — the EXIF block does not survive. It is still a poor way to clean a photo, for three reasons. The screenshot carries its own metadata, including your device and the moment you took it. You lose quality and often resolution, since you are capturing a scaled preview rather than the original pixels. And it removes nothing that is visible inside the picture. Stripping the file properly keeps the original quality and takes about the same amount of time.
Can photo metadata be changed?
Yes. Metadata is editable data, and plenty of tools will rewrite a timestamp, add a copyright line or set a location. Photographers do this legitimately all the time — correcting a camera clock after a trip, or adding IPTC credit before delivering a shoot. This tool deliberately only removes and never rewrites, apart from preserving the rotation, colour profile and copyright fields you explicitly choose to keep. Editing metadata to misrepresent when or where an image was made is a different act with real consequences, and it is not something we build for.
