Where TIFF keeps its metadata
In TIFF the metadata is the directory structure itself. An image file directory lists every tag, mixing structural entries such as strip offsets with personal ones such as Artist, Software, GPS and XMP.
How we remove it
We append a freshly built directory containing only the image-critical tags and repoint the file header at it, then zero the old directory and the value heap of everything dropped. The pixel strips never move, so they remain byte-identical.

- TIFF is common in scanning, archival and print workflows, where files often pass through several organisations — each adding its own identifying tags.
- Multi-page TIFFs are handled: the whole directory chain is rebuilt and relinked, so every page survives.
- The cleaned file can be a few bytes larger than the original, because the new directory is appended rather than squeezed into the old one. The image data is unchanged.

After each removal we re-read the finished file and, where the browser can decode both, compare every pixel against the original to prove nothing changed.
