Free EXIF remover online
Strip camera settings, serial numbers, lens info and GPS coordinates from your photos directly in your browser without re-encoding a single pixel.
What is EXIF data and why remove it?
Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is metadata embedded automatically into digital photos by smartphones and cameras. While helpful for photo cataloging, EXIF tags quietly expose private details: the exact date and second you took the photo, the camera or phone serial number, exposure settings, and embedded GPS coordinates pinpointing where you were standing.
Sharing photos on forums, marketplaces, or messaging apps with EXIF intact allows anyone to download the original file and read your location history or fingerprint your equipment.
Why lossless EXIF removal matters
Most online "EXIF cleaners" take a shortcut: they draw your image onto a browser canvas and
call toDataURL(). While this wipes metadata, it also forces your photo through a
lossy re-compression cycle (typically degrading JPEG quality to 85% or 92%). Repeating this
causes compounding compression artifacts.
Our engine uses direct binary container parsing:
- JPEG / JPG: Drops the
APP1(EXIF/XMP) andAPP13(IPTC) marker segments while streaming the raw compressed entropy data untouched. - PNG: Strips
eXIf,tEXt,zTXt, andiTXtchunks without touching IDAT image blocks. - WebP: Drops EXIF and XMP RIFF chunks and updates the container header flags.
- HEIC / AVIF: Overwrites metadata item payloads in place so file container offsets remain valid without decode loss.

Questions people ask about this
- Does screenshotting a photo remove its metadata?Yes, for the original metadata — a screenshot is a new file that never contained it. But you pay for that in resolution, and the screenshot carries its own metadata instead.
- Can image metadata be faked or edited?Yes, all of it. EXIF, IPTC and XMP are plain editable fields, and rewriting them takes seconds with freely available tools. Metadata is a claim, not evidence.
- Do all photos have metadata?Almost every photo straight from a camera or phone does. Images that reach you by other routes often carry very little, and some carry nothing at all.
- What is photo metadata used for?Sorting, searching, mapping, editing and copyright. It exists for good reasons — the privacy problem is a side effect of how well it does its job.
- What are examples of image metadata?Coordinates, camera model and serial number, lens, exposure settings, capture time, orientation, colour profile, copyright — and in AI images, the prompt and seed.
